Chip off the old block

December 12, 2015

This evening the Doorknobs played another charitable gig in aid of the Aldridge Church Centre building fund, and St James’ Church Mere Green.

My role in these affairs is basically to sit at the back of the band on piano, fulfilling the time-honoured position of chord monkey (assistant chord monkey if a guitarist is present) and filling in with blistering improvisation if there are gaps to fill. Read the rest of this entry »

Urgent Request – Streetly Christmas Market

December 2, 2015

The wonderful Streetly Christmas Market at Wm. Wheats this Sunday is in dire need of a musician to entertain people arriving at the event. I had a plea today from Gemma for support because another person has been unable to commit.

I object

November 16, 2015

Recent events worldwide have brought many people to social media to reflect, share and be part of a virtual support network.

This in turn has drawn some to observe the futility of pressing “Like” or “Share” unless it is accompanied by action.

It can be tempting to wade in either in support or defence of the original posts, likers, sharers, cynics or realists. However, it is important to remember what I like to think of as Dan’s Uncle Keith. Read the rest of this entry »

Bostin! Getting on my bike

September 26, 2015

Having failed to attempt the Coast to Coast earlier this year, I was determined to get on my bike a bit more. Commuting was a definite option, and I’ve secured a place in the lock-up at work to keep it in.

I can’t, though, get over the fact I’m riding a borrowed steed: thanks to the kindness of a good mate, I’ve been mobile on a very decent touring bike. Read the rest of this entry »

Blind Spots when Parking

August 16, 2015

Another sunny day in Aldridge, home of the Aldridge School of Creative Parking.

2015-08-16 10.28.34

Popped into Tesco this morning during a quiet moment, and came out to this lovely bit of parking. Yes, it’s on double yellow lines. No, it isn’t actually blocking anyone in, but…

I suspect the driver failed to spot the empty spaces in the car park. That’s a heck of a blind spot. Not even to have checked before occupying the road seems a pointless act of hubris.

Wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility scooters can’t get by you, drivers have their line of sight reduced and you affect the flow of traffic along the road. While there are empty spaces in the car park? You qualify for at least a slow hand clap.

Best Laid Plans

August 14, 2015

So I’m not cycling across the country. I’m sitting in my lounge watching Star Trek and have just eaten a chip supper. Read the rest of this entry »

Where’s tha’ bin?

August 12, 2015

So the old joke goes:

“Sidney, where’s the bin?”

“Ah bin nowhere Alfred, where’s tha’ bin?” Read the rest of this entry »

37.1%

August 12, 2015

After only three days, the No Dice Kickstarter has reached £371 of the thousand needed to fully fund it.

I must say I’m very pleased at this, and frankly it won’t happen at all without the unerring support of some very dear friends and family.

While I’m away this weekend tackling the Coast to Coast, it’ll still be up there and I’ll be checking religiously to see if anyone else has jumped on board.

Thanks to everyone who’s already there. A proper roll call of supporters and thanks will be forthcoming if we end up fully funded!

Around and around, up and down.

August 8, 2015

Next weekend I’m embarking on the single most inadvisable sports-related thing I have ever attempted. In the space of three days a team of us will cycle from Whitehaven to Tynemouth in aid of Kids UK.

I am to cycling what Bradley Wiggins is to eating pizza and drinking ale. Yes, I like to do it, but it distracts me from my life’s primary calling. Read the rest of this entry »

On the road again with Dischord

August 6, 2015

Just a quick post to highlight Dischord’s next gig.

We’re on the Arboretum Bandstand in Walsall in a couple of weeks’ time, and looking for collaborators who fancy sitting in for a few numbers. Last year it was good fun, and very relaxed. This year, we cancelled our first Arboretum date due to bad weather. Here’s hoping we’ll be able to make this one.
