It’s a wonderful set of insights into the big numbers and trends.

Social Media use is already commonplace, but I think understanding it is still quite a niche thing. I particularly enjoyed the observations about using messenger apps to link up people of all ages.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again…

Never argue with an idiot.

Dan Slee’s Uncle Keith came up in conversation again this week. He has a message for the social web in terms of straight thinking, does Uncle Keith, and really it’s only one core principle.

To the casual observer, one person arguing with an idiot looks very much like two idiots arguing with each other. Never more so than on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn (I mean, why would you?), etc.

2017 in review

It’s only a couple of weeks old, so it’s probably harsh to try reviewing 2017 already, but I know there are a couple of things coming up I wanted to muse on, so here goes.

I object

Recent events worldwide have brought many people to social media to reflect, share and be part of a virtual support network.

This in turn has drawn some to observe the futility of pressing “Like” or “Share” unless it is accompanied by action.

It can be tempting to wade in either in support or defence of the original posts, likers, sharers, cynics or realists. However, it is important to remember what I like to think of as Dan’s Uncle Keith.

Social Reach

I noticed a few weeks ago I was approaching 300 followers on Twitter. Knowing that these things vary day to day, I’ve waited until I’m fairly certain it’s remaining above 300 before declaring the number a fixture.

Driving us all to Distraction

Well done to the Express & Star who this week uncovered the purchase of a brand new Jaguar for use as an official car by the Mayor of Walsall, and the subsequent demands that he boycott its use.

Not the actual car in question, although it is better looking.

Brownhills Bob wrote a suitably scathing post about it.

“Best Thing Ever” – that’s how my new job was described by a friend on Facebook last Friday, when I announced to all and sundry that I had a new job.

Yesterday evening, browsing the Tesco near to my house, I found a chocolate bar on the shelf which made me laugh like I’ve rarely laughed before.

Right then, time to get this Social Media Surgery looking like a holiday activity club.

We’re meeting in August at the Black Country Arms on Wednesday 14th, at about half six. We’re not running a traditional surgery, although advice and help will be on tap as usual, but we will be chilling out, sampling the fine range of ales and other beverages available, and having a bit of a relax.
