Right, before I start, I should point out I have some background here, but little experience.
I have a BA(Hons) in Music from University of Wolverhampton which is not the greatest institution in the world but did give me a basic grounding in musicology and a bit of a start in composition. I also have a genuine love of contemporary church music, and keep a lazy eye on developments out of the “mainstream” guitar-driven pop which seems the current vogue in Evangelical Protestant Western churches.
So, for my challenge of 2012, I thought writing a Cantata sounded like a good idea. I announced my intention on my blog on December 29th, 2011. I’ve given myself a deadline, and put a countdown timer on the blog, to keep me focussed. I also have generic reminders posted in my calendar throughout the year to prompt essential points of production planning. The aim is produce a Cantata which is ready to perform, and if possible to get it performed.
So far I have enlisted a few of my close friends and musical colleagues (sometimes the same people!) to help me write, stage, script, and otherwise assemble the whole thing.
I’ll update my progress from time to time with posts in the Cantata Category, and generally keep things on the road. In the meantime, I guess it’s simply a matter of waiting and seeing what I manage to produce. On the positive side of failure, I’m still going to learn a lot trying to do this even if I don’t get there. On the other hand, it could be a major achievement and I’m looking forward to the attempt.
